University research in Germany concluded in 2004 that the average life of mastic asphalt in use was 40 years.
Their research concluded that mastic asphalt could be recycled 5 times, securing a minimum of 200 years of satisfactory in situ performance.
Pure Asphalt now recycle mastic asphalt for use as:
- Pre-formed factory produced products
- Bricks for use in Pacopatch reinstatements
- Hot charged underlay on factory floors
- Screeding coats, roofs and car parks
- aggregate filled bricks for pot hole and patch repairs to carriageways
Footpaths on five of the M5 overbridges in Gloucestershire were completed for the Highways Agency in 2005 using a 50% recycled product mixed with new. All sites are performing satisfactorily in 2010.
Demonstration trials totalling several months have been completed in a number of county and urban authorities, with complete success with 'pot holing' outputs averaging 30 per day at a cost of £25 - £40 per hole. These costs compare very favourably with the nationally quoted average of £72 per pot hole in 2009/10.
- Saving ratepayer's money
- Re-using scarce resources
- More durable product
- Lasts longer than macadam
- Voidless material eliminating freeze / thaw cycle
- Unaffected by water or frost
Above all, there is no waste as every ounce is used, making it a more cost effective alternative to conventional materials.
